Much thanks for having Jeff Cohen on today! Jeff is one of my FB pals and fellow member of PDAmerica.org. You didn’t mention he also teaches at Ithaca College….

  5. Couple of interesting (and relatively short) posts from a couple of days ago that I ran across this morning…

Romer: ‘You care about the deficit because it allows you to do things you need to do to help people who are suffering’

‘Saying it’s structural is not the same as saying it’s not our problem’

IMHO unemployment is the biggest financial problem right now, and with sluggish demand, that’s not due to change anytime soon. (I fall on the demand side of the argument.) It will be difficult to change the demand side of the equation unless the rich open their wallets and let some money back into the ecosystem. They could do this by hiring speculatively, raising wages (for all workers, not just themselves), or paying higher taxes (or all three). I frankly don’t care which, but until they restore money back into the ecosystem, we’re stuck.

  6. Political Unrest in the Middle East
Ellen Laipson, Discusses the Middle East with James Zogby

Ellen Laipson, President and CEO of the Henry L. Stimson Center, gave an analysis of the violence and political unrest throughout the Middle East.
    *and on the second half:
Jim O’Sullivan, Chief Analyst for the National Journal Daily, discussed Libya and the national debate surrounding President Obama’s decision to back U.N. Resolution 1973.

  13. Jeff Cohen will get my money….he is the bomb!! I think merc. went into retro on Saturday….I couldn’t understand a word Steve said!!

  14. Jeff Cohen’s points about focus, independence and money were spot-on.

One can extend Cohen’s analysis back into the early progressive era of the Gilded Age. It is axiomatic to state that progressive political groups and nascent unions were actively cut-off from monies – period. The “robber barons” smashing unions by hiring mercenaries like the Pinkertons never gave or forgave the giving of monies to popular political agitators.
