I can’t help but see the US/UK Uncut movement as parallel to the Bernie Madoff incident, where a systemic problem is focused via transference to an easy to comprehend target who is then vilified, without then addressing the significant structural changes that need to happen. I just can’t get on-board with this because these movements never really know what to do after the target is carted away.
10:56 am
If they could actually get these targets “carted away” we would be living in a very different country–and that (not to sound like another financial criminal
) would be a good thing.
(Disclaimer: Have not listened to the podcast yet…Maybe you have more of a reason for saying what you are saying than what I am thinking.)

The only way to fix the problem is by making laws and enforcing them.
Congress needs to create a tax code that is simple and straight forward, perhaps a flat tax for corporations and no loopholes. They could then lower the overall rate to say, 25%, and not allow savvy tax preparers finagle the tax codes to zero out what they owe.
But first, the (USUncut) movement has to bring awareness to the general public so they can all be outraged at the idea that our tax dollars fill their tax loopholes. By getting these corporate tax dodger to pay their taxes our federal revenue increases and budgets can be balanced and deficits can be lowered. Cutting vital social programs only hurt the American public and does nothing to create jobs or revenue.
When the public band together great things can happen. They have the power of money, we have the power of numbers, money can’t vote but people can.
I would join the movement if I were you and be as active as possible and encourage them to continue the fight to change legislation.
In solidarity.

You couldnt be more wrong about UK uncut. UK Uncut deals with specific actions (accross numerous business to highlight tax dodging) but the message and aims are general. The aims are to stop tax dodging corporations and individuals in general.
We want tax loopholes etc shut down but really we want an in principle tax law as a bunch of other EU countries have. Meaning there is a general law which overrides lower tax loopholes and individuals and corporations have to pay their fair share.

Really great show. Seder has the makings of a great interviewer because not only is he smart and has a lot to say, but he also knows when to stop saying things and let his guest rule. Wonderful and heartening to listen to! Beauty.
