Thursday May 19 2011

If this is going to be the last Thursday before the Rapture, we mine as well give those of you leaving us one hell of a Thursday show! We’re assuming guest pickings will be slim after May 21st.

Today, we have not one, but TWO guests! First, we have Eddie Glaude (@esglaude). He is the chair of the Center for African-American Studies and the William S. Tod Professor of Religion and African-American Studies at Princeton University. If you haven’t read THIS, you should as he’ll be on to discuss Cornel West.

Our second guest is Matt Duss (@mattduss), who will be calling in live from Tel Aviv! Matt is National Security Policy Analyst at the Center for American Progress and will be joining us to talk President Obama’s Middle East speech.

Wow, seeing that advertisement before the Ed Show clip about how BP keeps its promises reminds me of someone I’d rather spend my time and money on . . . . wait for it . . . . would now be a good time for . . . .

  3. Linda in Denver says:

I guess Obama’s speech will be too long for Sammy to cut to as part of the show. I’ll be tuning out to listen to the speech. Catch up with everybody later.

    • not-sam says:

      BOOO!

haha. It’s OK. Understandable. It’s not like the end of the world is near.

    • Pres always seems to preempt Sammy!

This one today is important though so need to listen.

      • Linda in Denver says:

        He sure is late.

        • Linda in Denver says:

Wonder what is keeping him. It’s not like he’s traveling in. It’s at the White House. Hillary is speaking ahead of him now, and I don’t think that was planned. I think she was sent out because Obama is delayed.

  4. clodene says:

    Buzz on the SammyCam sound.

    • not-sam says:

      Any better?

      • Linda in Denver says:

It is better since the break. It wasn’t a buzz to me, but maybe a little hollow tunnely sounding before — although it was not that bad to me. Clearer now.

  5. Jonathryn says:

Wow, what a great interview with Doctor Eddie Glaude. What a good time to remind listeners to become members.

Just go to the button on the majority.fm website that says “BECOME A MEMBER.” It only takes a moment, and you’ll be glad you helped make that interview with Dr. Glaude possible — and many others like it, such as the interviews earlier this week with Rolling Stone’s Matt Taibi as well as Hullabaloo’s Digby. Become a member today! Thanks!

Sammy, that’s a kind of weird definition of a public intellectual, what you said when you applied it to Cornel. To my mind, he has acted much more like one at many, many other times than during that “personal” part of the interview. At the same time, I agree with the IMer that said there was some measure of vicarious catharsis involved.

(But anyhow, wouldn’t your story about Rubin and his complaining about traffic make him kind of a pi too, by that definition. ;-) Wasn’t that Rubin. One of the MOTUs anyhow…)

Eddie Glaude “hit the hammer on the nail” about just about everything. Especially “whatever the truth value” there is or isn’t about West’s “psychobabbling Obama” (h/t Glen Ford) the important thing is the effect on policy and how accusations of engaging in “identity politics” (which has become a slur ) can be used to NOT get things done for real Black people and real people generally, who are suffering. And that, at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with African=Americans acting as a “pressure group” just like everyone else does, but w/o the snipety snipe snipe snipe snipe about who is a “free Black man” and who isn’t (also kind of androcentric, btw. Yes, I know that O is a man etc, so…but still…).

Yes there’s an “emotional connection” to your group but part of being an really responsible public Intellectual (little p capital I on purpose) is working through that and applying it towards a rigorous critique of society/policy that tends to show people ways to improve things. (Easier said than dood, dude.)

He was an amazing interview, Sam.

    Sammy’s second guest said:

    small bore…
    into the weeds…
    vision…
    swing for the fences…

    Goodness. When I hear analysis like that, I just tune out. LITERALLY! {click}
