12/8 Battle for Brooklyn, Filmmaker Suki Hawley

A great show in store for you today.  Suki Hawley, director of Battle for Brooklyn, is here with us to talk about her acclaimed film.  It’s the story of one neighborhood’s battle to fight big business from taking their homes.

“…The pundits who continue to say they don’t understand what the protesters behind Occupy Wall Street want should look at Battle for Brooklyn, the award-winning documentary about the Atlantic Yards that was released this summer.  The film was released before the Wall Street protests began, but the story it tells is a strong summary of the crony capitalism that sparked the OWS movement.”  — Michael O’Keeffe, New York Daily News

  5. I have not listened to the entire show yet to see if anyone corrected Sam about his misunderstanding of how Emergency Contraception works.

It does not work by preventing implantation!! Let me repeat that: It does not work by preventing implantation.

It works by preventing ovulation or fertilization. This is a very important difference.

In the first case, the mistaken case Sam repeated, a fertilized egg is prevented from implanting and growing. This sets off alarm bells with nut cases who believe that a fertilized egg is the equal of a human being. It is often why people object to EC/Plan B.

In the second case, the actual case of how it works, an egg is never fertilized, it is no different than regular daily taken birth control pills. It controls when the egg is released. Taking Plan B prevents the release of the egg from the ovum so it can not be fertilized.

Please don’t make this mistake as it feeds into the lies told by nut jobs.

There is some discussion as to if it also prevents implantation, but that is certainly not its intended route of preventing pregnancy and research shows it is not likely to happen.

Please see the references in the wikipedia article on Emergency Contraception and its discussion of method of action:
