Sen. Mark Kirk could have left-side problems after a stroke
underwent “successful” surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering, his office said Monday.
After being stricken Saturday, Kirk, 52, who is divorced and lives in Highland Park, drove himself to Lake Forest Hospital, “where doctors discovered a carotid artery dissection in the right side of his neck,” his office said.
Kirk was later transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where tests showed that he had suffered an ischemic stroke, his staff said.
“Early this morning, the senator underwent surgery to relieve swelling around his brain stemming from the stroke,” his office said. “The surgery was successful.”The
surgery was to relieve swelling around his brain.
Kirk’s office said his doctors are “very confident” about his recovery “over the weeks ahead.”
A Northwestern Memorial surgeon said the senator suffered a stroke” to the right side of his brain. What that means is it will affect his ability to move his left arm and possibly his left leg.”
He said the senator’s speech and thinking weren’t affected, adding, “We’re very hopeful . . . he should be able to do very well.”
The surgery took place Sunday night and involved “removing a part of his skull to relieve swelling.”
Kirk took himself to the hospital Saturday after suffering dizziness and a headache, and, once he was transferred Sunday to Northwestern Memorial, his condition was deteriorating.
