PROGRAM NOTE: No show tomorrow, folks. Enjoy your 4th of July! We’ll be back on Thursday.
Sam and Bill Scher (@billscher), executive editor of Liberal Oasis, Huffington Post contributer, and on line campaign manager at Campaign for America’s Future, debate the merits of the Obama Presidency. Check out Scher’s op-ed piece in the New York Times that extolls the virtues of our 44th President. Click thru and use this post as today’s thread.

A Face In The Crowd
When philosophical country/western singer Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes is “discovered” in the local lock-up by television talent coordinator Marcia Jeffries, she decided that Rhodes deserves a guest appearance on a TV variety show. The gangly, overly humble Rhodes is an instant sensation, and as he quickly ascends toward superstardom he attracts fans, sponsors and endorsement deals until he is the most powerful and influential entertainer on the airwaves. Beloved by his public audience, they would never believe that he has turned into a scheming, power-hungry manipulator with Machiavellian political aspirations. What Rhodes does not realize is that the higher the rise, the farther the fall; not only does he wind up losing his fame and fortune, but he also loses those who cared about him before his ego took control of his life.

Shorter Scher: “Clsp harder hippies!” Dude’s clueless
12:49 pm
oops, “Clap harder hippies!”

Scher says that the brand is fine as long as you stop talking about cuts in Social Security. This is what’s wrong with the party as a whole, and why Dems have switched to “independent” by the droves.

I’ll give Bill the benefit of the doubt and assume his agenda is to convince more people, liberals in particular, to support the president.
You can’t do this by presenting a very narrow selective argument in his favor and ignoring all the clear unambiguous evidence that he does indeed favor banks and corporate interests, sometimes in ways that directly hurt, not just fail to help, but literally cause direct harm to Americans. You can’t just ignore the evidence that doesn’t fit the case you’re trying to make, and then imply that if we don’t buy your whole argument, we must be unreasonable and childish, or ignorant or whatever. Predictably, people don’t like that and get angry.
So Bill, if you want to piss off the liberal base, keep doing what your doing. Otherwise, you might consider advocating for the administration to be more progressive so we can believe Obama is not just the slightly lessor evil of two horribly bad choices in November, because that’s the best you can hope to achieve, and that’s not very inspiring.

Bill Scher is an ignorant obamabot. Whiny crying typical weak lib

My new Android phone auto-corrects “Barack” with “Barry.” And, speaking of the concept of “brand” (as Scher does), I can think of no better description of Obama than “Barry.”

WOW!
I listened to this debate live, and then later today had some time at work to listen again. It’s great.
I wish (or dream) that you could find a libertarian who could debate you at this level, Sam.
Also the debate with Scher really helped me clarify some of my own thinking about why I am a Progressive and not a Democrat.
It would be so great to have you do more of these one-on-one debates on various topics as we head into the election, because it allows people who are left of Obama the chance to see why pushing harder on our issues still could make a difference.
Also, I remember from your previous programs, how you would bring in local candidates around the country for some air time as a GOTV (get out the vote) strategy. How about starting to get that process revved up for the election?
You are such a Master Debater. And “Kathy Harris” made me laugh so hard yesterday that I snorted the water I was drinking out my nose! I’m sure Myla would like that.

Bill Scher is an apologist for neo-liberal policies, nothing more. He’s useless.

And, I love how Bill Scher keeps blaming FDR for Obama’s shitty policies. What a douche!

We refer to this specific discussion on our podcast this week because it’s a great example of two smart liberals disagreeing without eating each other alive or devolving into name calling. I wish the commenters here (Obamabot, douche, Barry, apologist, useless) had more of your sharp-headedness, Sam. We can make progress as progressives on lots of issues, but not without the help of our no-less progressive but more accommodating Democratic allies. There is lots of room on the political spectrum between going full Blue Dog and thinking that re-electing Obama means you’re a traitor.
