Happy MLK Jr. Day. Today’s show is a compilation of clips including excerpts from “The Frank McGee Sunday Report: Martin Luther King Profile,” NBC News, May 7, 1967, followed by a brief excerpt from a speech at Cleveland, Ohio, on April 28, 1967. Then extended excerpts of a MLK sermon at the Ebenezer Baptist Church on April 30, 1967, then the CBS evening news with Walter Cronkite reporting on the assassination on 4-4-68 and finally, Nina Simone singing “Why?” recorded live three days after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Members will also hear MLK’s last speech Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution delivered at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C., on 31 March 1968.

We eagerly await today’s compilation.
I remember listening to last years selection several times over as I completed house chores.

Sorry about the Pats. Actually, no, I’m not. Go Ravens! Sam, regarding names for Baby X, have you considered “Gringo Seder?”

Hi Sam, Great selection of MLK’s speeches and coverage of his assassination. I was a kid at the time but vividly recall his assassination – it’s great to re-experience the event through adult eyes (or ears) and hear the implicit acceptance of the way things were, these things just happen in the news coverage, even from someone as relatively perceptive as Walter Cronkite. I actually flew over the Detroit riots at about 4,000′ and saw what a major city looks like when entire blocks are smoking ruins, so I’m not minimizing the threat of riots. Still, it struck me that the prevailing concern was the self-interest in preventing riots (which was accomplished by the calming words of RFK, himself shot two months later). Looking back, the mainstream perception of events just seems crazy and clueless.
Also, awesome Delta blues riff at 9 min 54 sec to 10 min 28 sec on the members’ version, and 11 min 12 sec to 11 min 48 sec on the freebie.
